They say that to avoid getting into a creative rut, it’s good to push yourself to do something that makes you uncomfortable every now and then. Something that’s not familiar so that you’re forced to see things in a new way.
Normally I’m not a big proponent of what “they” say ( because surely “they” would disapprove of the fact that the only time I make my bed is when I’m putting clean sheets on it) but in this case it was great to shoot a band for the first time.
My friend Amanda’s boyfriend is in a band called That 30/60 and when he asked me to take pictures of them for their latest cd I agreed without thinking twice about it.
When the session got closer, THEN I started thinking…What do I DO with a band? They don’t drool like babies, or run around like kids, or kiss like couples. How do I pose a group of people who aren’t related or in love??
That’s when I got a little nervous.
I arrived at the shoot and realized that the guys were just as unsure as I was. The general idea of the shoot was to have an informal jam session, but other than that, it was wide open.
Sometimes, the best plan is no plan, so we just went with it. I took pictures as the guys played their instruments, sang along and tapped their feet on the old wooden slats of the porch. In between songs they’d drink beer and move around while we chatted about their plans for the future of band.
There was no scrambling for cheerios to coax a smile from a baby. There were no family formals.
Then, somewhere between my first encounter with a banjo and sips of Red Stripe…I learned that while a little nerve wracking, doing something different is good.
Little London always finds a way to look so cute I can’t resist adding her to the blog post!
