Four Years Since Saying Yes

Matthew paced back and forth around our room at The Georgian Terrace as I got ready for dinner.

I had my hair up in hot rollers, which I NEVER do because it takes forever and I’m not very good at it.

How much longer until you think you’re ready?

I told him it would be a while, because curling my hair takes longer than straightening it like I usually do.

I wanted my hair to look as pretty as possible for our Valentine’s Day dinner, especially since I thought there was a slight chance tonight would be the night.

You know.  The night.

We finally made our way downstairs for our fancy dinner and I cringed inwardly as Matthew wolfed down his meal.

Slow down! This is a nice meal.  Enjoy it!

He ate quickly anyway.

By the time we had both polished off dessert, I was convinced that it wasn’t happening.

I thought there would have been a surprise bit of sparkle at some point in the meal, but there wasn’t.

I shook off a bit of disappointment and felt silly to have gotten so excited about the possibility.

After all, we’d only been together for eight months.

Matthew went down to the car to get my gift and when he came back, he abruptly announced that we were going outside.

It was February.  It was cold.  I didn’t particularly want to go outside.

Yet I followed him, and we took the elevator up to the top floor of the hotel.

Once we got out of the elevator, we were met by two security guards who escorted us to the rooftop deck. (They might  consider adding a porch to enjoy the view from up here)

I began to suspect that something was up.

Upon arriving at the rooftop, I was greeted by a beautiful view of the city lights, and a table with roses and a bucket of champagne.

The guards had mysteriously disappeared, and Matthew and I were alone.

I have no idea what he said other than something about loving me and us being a good team.

Then all of a sudden, there he was, down on one knee asking me to marry him!

Laughing and crying at the same time, I said yes and gave him a big kiss.

It’s been four years since I said yes.

If you had told me back then that over the course of four years I’d skip being a lawyer and follow my dreams, Matthew would open up his own law firm, and we’d become parents to a crooked-eared, rock-eating dog, I wouldn’t have believed it.

Yet here we are, with so many fantastic memories behind us, and even better ones ahead.

Matthew, thank you so much for asking me to be your wife.

Loving you is the easiest thing I do every day.  I love you always.

All my love,

B
